A 63-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly selling his nine-year-old grandchild for GH¢100,000 at Osu in Accra
Medaho Agbodzi, the suspect
The man, Medaho Agbodzi, claimed he did not have money to take care
of the little girl, as he was responsible for 10 more children,
including his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Briefing the Daily Graphic, the Director-General of the Criminal
Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, Deputy
Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Mrs Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah, said the
Anti-Human Trafficking Unit of the CID gathered intelligence that a man
was offering his nine-year-old granddaughter for sale on February 22,
2018.
Immediately, she said, officers from the unit mounted surveillance on
Agbodzi, while he was contacted by a man who had expressed interest in
the sale of the girl.
The two men negotiated the price and settled on GH¢100,000 and they agreed to meet at a location at Osu to seal the deal.
Unknown to Agbodzi, the buyer had informed the police about the transaction and they laid ambush for him.
The police arrested Agbodzi as he handed over the girl to the buyer and took possession of the girl.
No money
Mrs Addo-Danquah said further information gathered by the police
indicated that the victim lived with her maternal grand-aunt in the
Volta Region.
The grand-aunt is said to have demanded GH¢50 from Agbodzi to enable
her to buy the victim’s school uniform and other material needs.
When Agbodzi could not provide the money, the grand-aunt became angry and handed over the girl to him.
Agbodzi told the police that the girl’s father absconded when he impregnated his (Agbodzi) daughter.
The victim has since been sent to a shelter, while the police continue to investigate the case.
